January-March 2007

Dear Enquirer,

BLAVATSKY LODGE

Welcome to the second e-newsletter of The Foundation for Theosophical Studies, which lists our events this week at the London headquarters of the Theosophical Society in England.

It includes details of our Sunday lecture, our on- going Sunday course which introduces Theosophy and our Tuesday study course on Madame Blavatsky's major work,The Secret Doctrine. It also features the Blavatsky Lodge’s Spring programme and a short history, collated by Erica Lauber.

We are gearing up to send more general details about the TS in future editions. Also in future issues, we plan to include details of other TS events around the country. Remember meanwhile that you can buy CDs or tapes of many of our lectures

We are aware that some of the newsletter 'click- throughs' to our website need attention and this will be sorted out in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, you can access previous newsletters.

If you have any comments about the newsletter and the sign up process, please send them to us. We are always keen to improve!

Very best wishes,
Colyn Boyce

    BLAVATSKY LODGE 1887-2007
    H.P.Blavatsky at Norwood in 1887

In June 1878 the Theosophical Society established its first branch in London, which became known as the London Lodge. But by 1884 there had arisen deep divisions within it and the two Masters of Wisdom who had esoterically helped found the TS withdrew their support from the Lodge; in due course it collapsed.

However, a small group of London Theosophists were keen to revive Theosophical work in England. They wrote to H. P. Blavatsky, hard at work in Ostend on her great work The Secret Doctrine, asking for advice. She responded generously, and at their request came to London in early May 1887 to direct their efforts. She stayed with the Keightleys at Norwood, in a small house called Maycot.

It was there on Thursday May 19th that Blavatsky Lodge was formed and held its first meeting, with 14 people present. The Lodge was dedicated to the study of The Secret Doctrine which HPB continued to write. Maycot proved too small for all the activities and visitors, so another house was found, 17 Lansdowne Road, Notting Hill, where Blavatsky Lodge meetings were held, and work on The Secret Doctrine continued and was completed.

By 1890 the membership of the Lodge had reached 300. In 1891, HPB passed away, her body worn out. Annie Besant became the second president of the Lodge. By1905 membership had grown to 400. In 1934 the Theosophical Society purchased 50 Gloucester Place (previously an embassy), where the Society remains to this day.

The current Lodge president is John Gordon who has studied Eastern and Western Ancient Mystery traditions for over thirty years. His particular expertise is Ancient Egypt about which he has written several deeply esoteric books.
